QUIZ SHOW - 19-06-05

Assalaamu Alaikum Everyone!

This term has been so busy, Alhamdulillah and yet Sister Ahdielah and our Religion staff have managed to organise a fantastic educational event for our students to enjoy at Dianella. It has proven to be an amazing experience. The students and staff were very excited and had so much fun as they battled against their counterparts, learning valuable Islamic facts along the way.

The idea was first thought about by a few Religion Staff throwing ideas around the table. Sister Ahdielah thought the idea was brilliant and sent Brother Nadeem to work with his multiple talents. He compiled a set of questions and answers using HTML coding and internet graphics. It took about a week to compile, many hours of blood, sweat and tears…well perhaps not blood, but you get the general idea.

In the lead up to the quiz show, Brother Nadeem and the religion team worked night and day to compile a booklet for the students. It comprised of relevant questions and references to guide them in their studies and preparation for the quiz. The questions for the booklet were taken from their Religious Studies books and also from the AIC reference websites. Students within the class were then tested and selected by religion staff, to represent their class - based on their results. A total of 4 students were nominated per class.

On the Friday before the Quiz Show, Brother Nadeem and Brother Faizel gathered the nominated representatives and briefed them on the rules, behaviour standards and answers to any questions or queries the students had. Brother Yunus was selected as an Islamic guide while lucky Sister Asheeqah was nominated to keep score across all grades. They were both briefed on the rules and format of the quiz. Students all made duah that Allah SWT assist and guide them as they strive to attain success Insha Allah. He wished them the best of luck and the students left the room feeling quite excited, anxious, confident and somewhat nervous about the event.

I managed to steal Brother Nadeem away from his PC for a few moments for a quick interview before the show. Here’s what he had to say in the 5 invaluable minutes he spared me:

Q. How are you feeling about the big event?

A. Excited, and a little anxious, since this is only the second time we are having the quiz show and we are still in a trial period. I hope everything goes well with the technical side of things Insha-Allah!

Q. Was it a success last year?

A. Yes, the students were very excited and keen to participate and challenge themselves and the others in their grade. This is the main reason why we decided to repeat the show this year.

Q. What was/is the biggest challenge in organizing such a big event?

A. The time factor – preparing the students and myself, making sure it is fair for everyone.

Q. One last question, what advice do you have for the students involved in the quiz show?

A. Study, listen to/read the questions carefully and do your best. And make duah for Allah SWT to guide you!

Let’s hear what some of the contestants had to say before the show.

>>Ussama 4A I’m feeling a bit nervous (bites nails anxiously).

>>Daanyaal 5B I can’t wait to start! But I’m a bit nervous too.

>>Ream 6C I feel excited and nervous at the same time.

>>Mohammed 7A I studied my head off, I’m feeling like a winner!

>>Masra 9G I’m so scared miss, I don’t want to lose!

Indeed, we had a very entertaining show! We anticipated an eventful 2 days and it sure was. The highest score was 25 out of a total 27 questions. Most of the winning grades won by 3 or less points. It proved to be a nail biting finish for Year 5 and 6 classes, which added to the excitement and tension. Even the teachers went through emotional rollercoasters as they witnessed their students and shared either the victories or defeats with their students.

The paparazzi were unable to attend due to other commitments, but we had a reporter on the prowl. He pounced on any unsuspecting students and teachers, taking them aside for a few moments and using his reporter charm to conduct interviews with great determination. After several attempts, he was eventually given permission to be present during the quiz show. This is what he had to say about the events that took place:

“Well yet again the Dianella Campus have blown me away in producing this fabulous quiz show. I never encountered an event where teachers became so emotional about the efforts of their students…not to mention a teacher who clearly doesn’t know the difference between a butterfly and an elephant! A big congratulations to Sister Ahdielah and her team. I can’t wait for the next one. I sure hope I get informed this time! But I do have one small issue to address - Where were the samoosas? Oh and by the way, can I get a copy of those moving pictures Mr Nadeem? They are just brilliant!”

I guess that pretty much sums up our quiz show. We all had a wonderful time. It integrated Islamic knowledge and values with fun and excitement, all rolled into 2 days of non stop action! The students saw their Islamic learning from a more informal ‘fun’ perspective, and this encouraged them to learn about their religion. It has really been a great success for both the staff and students involved. A huge Jazaakallah once again to Sister Ahdielah and the Religion Staff at AIC Dianella. We keenly look forward to the next one Insha-Allah! And one last note to Brother Nadeem, now you know what technology challenges a computing teacher is faced with on a daily basis!

CHAMPIONS SCHOOL SOCCER - 05-08-05

On Friday the 29 th of July, 16 boys from Year 5 to 7 proudly represented AIC Dianella in the Champions School Soccer competition.

The competition is structured into four separate zones, North, South, East and West with the AIC being placed in the Northern division with nine other state and independent schools.

As we made the journey to Kingsway Olympic Soccer Grounds the bus filled with feelings of both anticipation and nervousness at the thoughts of the day’s events.

The ten teams were separated into two groups of five, with each team in the group playing each other once.

We had the bye in the first round of the carnival, which allowed us plenty of time to warm up and check out the opposition for the day.

On first inspection of the other teams the most commonly heard comments were: “Brother, look how big they are!” and “they’re really good man!”

Our first game was against Kinross Primary, things didn’t seem to be going our way as we were two nil down at half time, but the team rallied to score three second half goals and take a deserved win (and give me a heart attack in the process). Special mention must go out to our three goal scorers Taha Al Mogator, Karrar Al Safy and Zaid Iftikar (must run in the family Br Nadeem!)

In the following games against Aranmore Catholic College (3: 1), Koondoola (2: 0) and Mindare Primary (3: 2) the boys battled valiantly and played some great ball but luck just wasn’t on our side. At the end of the rounds we finished a gallant third, with only the first placed team in each group going through to the final.

Although we didn’t reach the final the greater achievement of representing our school with respect, pride and dignity and the opportunity to interact with other schools was an overwhelming success.

Thank you to Sister Ahdeliah for allowing us to practice and compete in the carnival and also to the teachers who allowed their students to compete.

A special thank you must go out to Br Reza and Br David for their time and support both at training and at the carnival, without your help none of this would have been possible.

Finally congratulations to the boys in the team, I am so proud of how you represented both yourself and the school, you were truly a credit to the reputation of our school.

I am sure that with further practice, experience and a bit of luck we can achieve even better results in the future.

Br Mac
