Focus Questions

 

What is each letter’s name, sound and character?

Where can you see the letter ... ? ie identify individual letters in words around the room or in their name.

Suggested introduction

 

Introduce children to the ‘magic’ letterland book where all the letterland characters live. To open the book we say the spell ‘izzy wizzy lets get busy’ and then knock on the book 3 times, only them will it open!

Introduce each character with a little story about them ie this is Bouncy Ben and he loves to bounce every where, he looks after all the words that begin with ‘b’. Then identify ‘b’ words and pictures in the book. Every character has a letter formation sheet and a Letterland song.

 

Letterland books can be purchased from Woolridges or similar.

 

Annie Apple- complete letter formation sheet.

Count the apples sheet, apple printing, ant printing -make ant using finger prints in paint or make egg carton ant using pipe cleaners for antennae .

Copy words beginning with a and draw picture – can do this for each letter

 

Bouncy Ben. - formation sheet.

Make blue bear mask. Sponge print plate blue, cut out blue ears. Blue balloon printing. Bounce balls in phys ed.

 

Clever cat - formation sheet.

Glue pre cut circles into caterpillar shape( use alternate coloured circles so children practise making a  simple pattern)add wobbly eyes. Could fasten with split pins. Make crabs from card with split pin jointed pincers.

 

Dippy duck - Cut out dippy duck letter, practise formation and add feather tail.

Complete Digger dog’s dot to dot dog house sheet - numbers 1 –5 or 1 - 10

 

Eddy Elephant - formation sheet.

Cut out and order different sized eggs from smallest to largest or by number order.

Make paper plate elephant masks with ‘concertina’ trunks.

 

Fireman Fred - complete formation sheet.

Use orange and red paint to make a ‘fingerpaint fire’ picture. Children could colour and cut out a fire engine to glue on top. Discuss numbers 4 and 5.Make frogs. Match fish with different patterned bodies – cut and paste.

 

Golden girl - complete formation sheet.

Make green card sun glasses with green cellophane lenses.

Eat  halal hotdogs. Handprinting. Make hats.

 

Impy ink - complete formation sheet.

Cut out card ice cream cone shape, glue onto paper, add cotton wool ice cream. Could make real ice cream cone. Inkwash picture.

 

Juggling Jim - complete formation sheet.

Make and taste jam sandwiches. Cut out paper numbered jam sandwiches match and glue to paper plate which has been divided into quarters and numbered also- can use numbers or draw dots for children to count.

 

Kicking King - Complete formation sheet.

Sponge print koalas and kangaroos. Cut out kite shape, add string and ribbons.

Make paper lolly. Cut out and colour circle - ‘lolly’, add popstick.

Munching mike - complete formation sheet.

Make a mouse or monkey mask.

 

Naughty Nick - complete formation sheet.

Make newspaper names. Cut out large letters from newspaper . Children select which in their name and glue in correct order. Discuss number 9.

Make a necklace using nine ‘beads’ eg pasta.

 

Oscar Orange - complete letter formation sheet. Make orange octopus. Blow up orange balloons. Cut eight orange legs, attach to balloon, draw face OR cut out orange semi circle and add legs OR paint polystyrene cup orange and add legs.

Discuss opposites - play opposite lotto or complete opposites worksheet.

Make 3D paper collage -  show children different effects with paper eg fringing/curling/scrunching

 

Quarrelsome Queen - formation sheet

Make crown.

 

Robber Red - enlarge formation sheet so filled with Robber Red. Children glue red paper rectangles onto robber for collage effect. Play robber (memorisation) game. One child removes object, ‘policeman’ to say what’s missing.

Make a robot.

 

Sammy snake – complete formation sheet

Make spider on string puppets.

Cut out snake shapes. Children to glue different coloured shapes onto snake to make a repeating pattern. Eat snake jellies. Discuss numbers 6 and 7.

 

Ticking tess - match the teapots worksheet (from Rhyme activities book). Make tea and toast. Sequence making a cup of tea pictures (same book) Discuss numbers 2,10  .

Have a teddy bear’s picnic. Make teddy hats/ears

Make a card turquoise turtle

 

Uppity Umbrella - Formation sheet

Discuss concepts  under and over. Use strips of paper to weave an under and over picture. Place a blob of glue on paper, press down end of strip, make loops and bridges, glue down. Then using other strips go under and over, glue down ends.

 

Vase of Violets - If poss bring in real violets. Cut out vase shape, glue onto sheet of paper or cut out 2 vase shapes and glue on to card roll back and front for 3D effect. Handprint purple flowers on top of vase and add yellow middles for 2D effect or make violets on straws to put in card roll for 3D effect.

 

 

Wicked Water Witch - make witch hats and star wands (glue star on to straw)

Make a fox in a box. Cut out net of a box, put together. Colour a card cut out of a fox – put the fox in the box to make a ‘fox in a box’.

Zigzag Zebra -Use picture of zigzag zebra, cut black stripes and glue in appropriate places on zebra. Play with zoo animals.

Make paper zig zag picture. Cut out or/and fold zig zags from paper, Glue onto sheet of A4. Use different colours and lengths.
