AIC- Frequent Locally Asked Questions

D-History

 Q1)   Who is the Founder of the AIC?

 Mr. Abdallah Magar.

QUALIFICATIONS ; 1954-1958; Bachelor of Science (Agriculture &Chemistry), Cairo University.

Statement from the University of WA indicating that his qualifications are at least equivalent to a B.Sc. (Agriculture) degree from UWA.

Experience ; Mr. Magar migrated to Australia after a successful 5 yrs teaching career in Baghdad and Morocco and 4 yrs Research career in Cairo.

3 yrs- Chief Chemist with Agric. Chemical Company (David Gray), Perth, WA

6 yrs -Managing director of Australian Aerosol Pty.Ltd, Perth, WA

4 yrs -R&D and Manufacturing Manager of Blue Cross Products Pty Ltd. (Wesfarmers).

6 yrs – Managing Director of Magar Enterprises Pty Ltd (Veterinary preparation for export).

21 yrs- till now-Founder & Director of Australian Islamic College.

Q2)   How did the AIC begin?

 In 1986, Mr Magar was touched by the tragic loss of a family friend/acquaintance.

Left behind were three young children, without any religious guidance and support emotionally and spiritually. The situation made Mr Magar realize the desperate need for an organized institution that aided Muslim migrants in Australia, providing guidance, advice and religious instruction facilities.

This spurred Mr Magar to establish the Muslim Community School’s humble beginnings in 1986 with only 2 teachers and 50 students. Today the renamed Australian Islamic College boasts over 2500 students, 290 staff and 3 Colleges.

Q3) What is the financial background of the school?

In the years from the inception of the school in 1986 until 1991 there was NO PROPER FUNDING from the Government and the school was supported financially by Magar Enterprises which was owned by Mr Magar.

There was a tremendous amount of financial strain during these early years, and through prayer, determination and a great amount of effort, support was sought and donated to the school by people who sacrificed much for the sake of pleasing Our Creator in this worthy cause.

In order to raise funds for the school, Mr Magar decided to travel overseas and during 5 trips was able, through the Grace of Allah, to raise $219,300.

During 1989/90 on another fundraising trip, Sheikh Abbas was able to raise approximately $100,000 in South Africa.

Thanks to Allah (the Creator of the Heavens and the Earth) Magar Enterprises was able to contribute the following:

$203,462 – DIRECT FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION

$350,000 – ADMINISTRATION, COMPUTER SERVICE AND OFFICE LEASING (DONATION)
========
$553, 462 – TOTAL DONATIONAL CONTRIBUTION FOR 5 YEARS
========

The above contribution was treated by the Commonwealth as income to the college, resulting in the reduction of the government grant to the College. For this reason, it has been advised by the accountants that as from 1/1/91, the College be charged a monthly service fee, a logical and practical solution. Following the historical trend of the previous 5 years the amount of fees charged by Magar Enterprises is as follows:

$40, 000 – Administration fees, $15,000 – Computer Service and $15,000 Office Leasing per year, as this will bring the level of overhead to the average level used by the Commonwealth for their calculation.

Mr. Magar’s current home was used as a guarantee for overdraft facility for the College (Thornlie) from 1986-2001 (16 years). This was necessary as there was a low level of Government funding to the college and the non-payment of school fees from approximately 90% of students. This house was only taken off as a guarantee after Al-Bassam offered to make the payment. Prior to this Mr Magar had a house he owned in Thornlie which was sold in 1989 for $65,000 and the funds donated toward the purchase of Thornlie College

During this period there was also a $350,000 grant to the school by the Islamic Bank of Saudi Arabiato build the Thornlie mosque and 2 storeys building in Thornlie. At this time we also saw Br. Al-Bassam step in to help us finish complete this project in 1994.

Mr. Magar also had 2 units in Booragoon (one is currently used as the head office of the College). In 1992 he sold the second unit for $110,000 and the funds were donated to the College.

As from 1/11/85 to 31/12/90 (5years) $553,462 was the total contribution for Magar Enterprises. Also Magar Enterprise gave a loan of $170,580 as at 31/12/93.

Alhumdulillah, we are blessed that many people have rallied together over the years and donated much to the continuation and betterment of our school; by donating their time, effort, experience, money and most importantly, their duas! May Allah (swt) bless them all. Thanks to Dr Hamza Amira for his donations toward the school & building fund of about $20,000.
