English Curriculum

The English curriculum is built around three interrelated strands: language, literature and literacy. Together, the strands focus on developing students’ analytical, creative, and critical thinking and communication skills in all language modes namely, listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating.

At Australian Islamic College, we recognise that our students come from multicultural backgrounds with varying levels of English literacy capabilities. To cater to their different needs and to give them the best opportunity to meet their literacy goals, students in Years 7-10 are placed in Accelerated, Mainstream and Literacy Enrichment Programs. A combination of explicit teaching and project-based learning make English lessons enriching, challenging and interesting.

At our school, the students are encouraged to critically engage with texts from Australian and world literature and develop an appreciation for the richness of the language and universal values. They evaluate the purpose, aesthetic features and conventions of texts and create their own imaginative, persuasive and analytical responses in a range of spoken, written and multimodal texts. Such engagement helps students develop a keen sense of themselves in today’s world and empowers them with the language to express themselves in various academic and social contexts.

In Years 11 and 12, different English pathways such as Foundation, General, English as an Additional Dialect or Language (EALD) and ATAR English are offered based on students’ future tertiary interests and eligibility requirements.

Various literary events and electives such as Drama and Journalism offer opportunities for students to hone their talents at speaking and writing and build confidence to function as positive, proactive and successful global citizens.
