The Australian Islamic College (AIC) has launched AfiyaEAP, a comprehensive employee assistance program that operates from an Islamic standpoint, rooted in Islamic values and cultural principles. Available across all six AIC campuses, the program is designed to support the mental health and well-being of educators and staff, both Muslim and non-Muslim.
The program, named “Afiya”—an Arabic word that translates to “well-being”—offers faith-based psychological and emotional support tailored to the unique needs of Muslim educators. It seeks to address key challenges such as burnout, workplace stress, and disengagement, while promoting professional satisfaction and resilience.
The program is designed to provide culturally-responsive service for culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, with a focus on Muslim-based organizations and schools. It provides confidential care that integrates Islamic principles with psychological support, ensuring a holistic approach to staff well-being.
This initiative reflects AIC’s commitment to blending Islamic values with academic excellence, recognizing that the well-being of educators directly impacts the quality of education provided to students.
Dr. Hanan Dover, who played a key role in developing AfiyaEAP, has played a pioneering role in integrating Islamic values into psychological practice. AIC acknowledges her contributions, noting the program as a significant step forward in faith-based education support.
With the launch of AfiyaEAP, AIC hopes to set a new standard for culturally sensitive wellness programs in education. By integrating Islamic values, the program enhances staff well-being, which in turn improves student experiences, fostering a thriving academic community. The college aims for this initiative to inspire similar programs globally.
