Perth –  The Australian Islamic College (AIC) Kewdale is bursting with pride after securing our first-ever premiership at the 2025 Multicultural Carnival, a milestone a decade in the making. After competing every year since the carnival’s inception in 2015, our Year 3/4 team clinched the Mixed Year 3/4 Red division title in a thrilling grand final, marking a historic victory for our school community.

The Multicultural Carnival, a cherished event in the Netball WA calendar, is a highlight for AIC Kewdale, bringing our diverse student body together to celebrate culture and sport. This year, our school proudly fielded three teams, including our first-ever mixed team, showcasing the inclusivity that defines our community. “I wanted to show the boys that netball is for everyone,” said Coach and PE teacher Nuria Ushoroff. “For many of our students, it was their first time playing netball, and despite some nerves, they absolutely loved it!”

Our Year 3/4 team shone brightly, winning five consecutive games before a nail-biting grand final. Though they fell short by one goal in the final match, their outstanding performance secured the premiership on percentage. “You could see all their practice paying off,” Ms. Ushoroff shared. “They adapted to the netball rules and umpiring with such determination.” The closing ceremony was a moment of pure joy, with students and parents erupting in celebration when our team’s name was announced. “The excitement was infectious—parents were congratulating everyone, and it was just fantastic,” Ms. Ushoroff added.

At AIC Kewdale, soccer has long been the sport of choice, but this premiership has solidified netball’s special place in our school. “The Multicultural Carnival is one of the biggest events on our PE calendar,” said Ms. Ushoroff. “It’s a day where we celebrate the diverse cultures that make AIC Kewdale so unique, connecting with other schools and students through the joy of netball. It’s incredibly inclusive, and that’s why we keep coming back.”

This victory is a testament to the hard work, teamwork, and spirit of our students, who embraced netball with enthusiasm and made our school proud. We’re already looking forward to next year’s carnival, ready to defend our title and continue celebrating the vibrant community that makes AIC Kewdale so special.
