In a major move to enhance student safety, the speed limit on Orrong Road outside the Australian Islamic College (AIC) in Kewdale has been officially reduced from 70 km/h to 40 km/h during designated school zone hours. The change, effective immediately, marks a major milestone for the local community and is expected to dramatically improve safety for hundreds of students commuting daily.
The decision comes after sustained advocacy from school leaders, government officials, and community members, highlighting the risks posed by high-speed traffic near the college. With many students walking, cycling, or using public transport along Orrong Road, the reduced speed limit is seen as a life-saving measure.
“This new reduced speed limit on Orrong Road is a vital investment in the safety and wellbeing of our children,” said Abdullah Khan, Executive Principal and CEO of AIC. “We thank the State Government, Ministers Rita Saffioti and Reece Whitby, and our local member Cassie Rowe for listening to our community and delivering this much-needed improvement.”
The initiative was championed by key government figures including Hon. Rita Saffioti, Deputy Premier and Minister for Transport; Hon. Reece Whitby, Minister for Police and Road Safety; and Cassie Rowe MLA, Member for Belmont. Their collaboration with AIC underscores a shared commitment to community wellbeing and proactive road safety reform.
The school emphasized that road safety is a collective responsibility, and this change reflects the power of coordinated action between government, educators, and families. Beyond the numbers, the reduced speed limit is expected to bring peace of mind to parents and foster a safer environment for students.
As the new signage goes up and enforcement begins, the Kewdale community celebrates a meaningful step toward a safer future — one where every child can travel to and from school with greater confidence.
